Does your computer have enough memory

Computers are being used extensively all around the world today by almost everyone for many tasks such as those related to work, entertainment and education. With this increased reliance on computing systems, it has become more important to have computers that work at optimum speed and efficiency. This is due to the fact that if the computers of a particular organization are slower than their optimum speed, the organization will be behind in the competition.

In this case, everyone would agree that the memory of a computer is directly related to the speed of the computer. In this case, memory could refer to both the virtual memory of the computer, the physical Random Access Memory or the memory on the hard disk. It is essential to know the answer to the question, ‘does your computer have enough memory?’.

Of course, having ‘enough memory’ does not necessarily mean having a lot of RAM or a massive hard disk. However ensuring you have sufficient RAM is important.  See our How to Check Computer Memory page for exact details on finding how much you currently have and how to get more.

There are other ways that you can use to optimize your memory using your Operating System. Windows comes with a range of in-built features that can be used to bring your RAM and hard disk to their best performing speed.

When your RAM is low, the best utility to use is the Process Manager in Windows. You can use this to stop any annoying processes that may be clogging up space in your RAM. However, this method is not recommended unless you are experienced in computing mechanisms, as you may stop essential processes by mistake.

Next, we will take the Virtual Memory of the computer into consideration. The Virtual Memory of the computer consists of a special space reserved by the operating system from the hard disk. This memory space is used as swap area to swap programs that are about to be run along with programs that are currently running.

If you fill up your C drive too much, it will limit Virtual memory and there will be no room to handle processes properly. This will cause your computer to slow down and Windows will start to spew error messages. The best thing to do is to clean the C Drive a bit whenever you get this kind of error messages or when your computer is slowing down.

By using these methods, it is possible to make sure that you have a satisfactory answer to the question, ‘does your computer have enough memory’.
